چکیده

Aim: In Kasese district of Western Uganda, farmers cultivating near Nyamwamba River (NR) experience crop wilting whenever the river banks burst. Increased cases cancer and ulcers in is anecdotally blamed on ingestion contaminated water from resources polluted by tailings Kilembe copper mines. Sand miners attested that mining NR caused body irritations itching while drinking same results abdominal complications infants. The aim this study was to assess seasonal variations physicochemical parameters heavy metals (HMs) content NR, associated health risks.
Place Duration Study: experiments were done at Department Chemistry, Faculty Science, Mbarara University Science Technology, Uganda 2018 2019.
Methodology: This employed quantitative research design. Water sampled down, middle upstream Mubuku River, during dry wet seasons. samples analyzed for (pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, suspended soils) HMs: chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), arsenic (As) (Cu) atomic absorption spectrometry. estimated daily intake (EDI), target harzard quotient (THQ) risks calculated explore if there are any carcinogenic non-carcinogenic could arise dermal contact with NR.
Results: Most only met WHO guidelines upstream. mean concentration Fe, Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd As 0.90-29.66 mg/L, 0.21-10.74 0.40-8.21 1.10-13.47 0.79-13.47 0.05-1.40 mg/L 0.22-4.34 respectively. Wet season recorded higher HMs concentrations when compared season, all its exceeding water. There an extremely high than expected. Health risk assessment indicated EDI through ranged 0.015 4.150 mg/kg/day water, values 0.008 × 10-6 38.266 mg/Lday. Some doses corresponding reference THQ exceeded 1 beyond US EPA borderline.
Conclusion: revealed serious consumption NR. Future studies should examine relationship between occurrence trace food stuffs cancer, other diseases area.

A prolonged, community-wide cholera outbreak associated with drinking water contaminated by sewage in Kasese District, western Uganda

BACKGROUND In May 2015, a cholera outbreak that had lasted 3 months and infected over 100 people was reported in Kasese District, Uganda, where multiple cholera outbreaks had occurred previously. We conducted an investigation to identify the mode of transmission to guide control measures. METHODS We defined a suspected case as onset of acute watery diarrhoea from 1 February 2015 onwards in a ...

Seasonal assessment of physicochemical parameters and evaluation of water quality of river Yamuna, India

The concentrations of toxic effluents released into freshwater aquatic environments are increasing day by day and affect the aquatic biota. The present study outlined the evaluation of physicochemical parameters such as water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphates (PO42--P), nitrates (NO3--N), electrical conductivity (EC)...

Evaluation of water quality in the Chillán River (Central Chile) using physicochemical parameters and a modified water quality index.

The Chillán River in Central Chile plays a fundamental role in local society, as a source of irrigation and drinking water, and as a sink for urban wastewater. In order to characterize the spatial and temporal variability of surface water quality in the watershed, a Water Quality Index (WQI) was calculated from nine physicochemical parameters, periodically measured at 18 sampling sites (January...
